LAW-BREAKERS ON ISLAND SANCTUARY
WHANGAREI, This Day (P.A.).— A party of three men, two from the Wild Life Branch pf the Department of Internal Affairs, and the third an ornithologist returned to Whangarei after a 11-day stay on Hen Island, off Whangarei heads, yesterday afternoon. One of the first things they saw when they landed on the island sanctuary on June 1 was a tin pierced with numerous bullet holes, grim evidence that some unauthorised person had broken the law, first by landing on the island without a permit, and, secondly, by taking a firearm on. to the sanctuary. Later, members of the party saw several dead birds, some of them red-fronted parakeets. The leader of the party was Mr Logan C. Bell. The ornithologist was Mr W. King, of Invercargill, who said that the co-operation of the public was essential if this priceless sanctuary was to be preserved as an asset to the Dominion.
