KNIGHTS IN N.Z. NOW NUMBER 47
WELLINGTON, This Day (0.C.). —The conferring of knighthoods on the Mayors of Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, announced in the King’s Birthday Honours list last week, brought the total of knights m New Zealand at present to 47, according to the records of the Internal Affairs Department. The accolade of Knight Bachelor conferred on the three mayors brings the number in this division to 24. The first indisputable record of this honour being conferred is in the days of Alfred the Great, about 506, when the King knighted his nephew.
