GOLF BEN HOGAN WINS U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP,

NEW YORK, June 11.—Ben Hogan, with one under par 69, won the playoff. of the United States open golf championship at Ardmore today, beating Lloyd Mangrum (73) and George Fazio (75). The play-off was necessary because Hogan, Mangrum, and Fazio tied at 287 at the end of 72 holes yesterday. . . Hogan and Mangrum each had par 36 at the end of nine holes, and'Fazio hhd 37. Hogan and Mangrum were still level at the eleventh, but Hogan went ahead at’the twelfth and was two strokes up at the fourteenth. Mangrum won back a stroke at the fifteenth with a birdie, and was still in the battle.

At the sixteenth, however, Mangrum thoughtlessly picked, up his ball to , blow off an insect which had settled on it, just as he was about to putt. The United States Golf Association penalised him two strokes, putting Hogan three strokes ahead. Hogan settled it » by holing a 50ft putt at the seven- , teenth for a birdie 2.
