PROGRESS WITH SEALING OF ROAD TO REEFTON

With the exception of that portion of the road over the saddle, motorists will be able to travel from Greymouth to Reefton on a sealed highway by the end of this summer. Mr A. B. Bremner, resident engineer, Ministry of Works, Greymouth, said today, that the road had been sealed with a primary coat as far as the bottom of the Greymouth side of the saddle. Preliminary work on the road between the saddle and Reefton is now in hand. Good progress had been made in recent weeks on the road, Mr Bremner said, and he estimated that the job would be completed by the end of the summer.

While plans had been out for some time to seal the Seven Mile road, between Runanga and Rapahoe, work had not been started on that project nor on the deviation of the road at Falkenback’s bend, Mr Bremner said. The approaches to the new bridge at Rapahoe had been completed and traffic was now able to use the bridge. Referring to the proposed construction of a stores building for the Grey district on a site near the South Beach railway station, 'Mr Bremner said that no.further progress had been made other than to clear and level the site. It appeared that stores buildings were being erected throughout New Zealand and “the Greymouth job will have to wait its turn.”
