CHASE THROUGH CITY STREETS: FUGITIVE THIEF
WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.). —A chase at high speed through Wellington streets was described in evidence in the Magistrate’s Court today when Gordon Ernest Waller, aged 25, a millhand, was charged with breaking and entering the premises of Todd Motors, Ltd, and committing theft and with converting a car valued at £lOOO. He pleaded guilty and was committed by Mr J. Hessell, S.M., to the Supreme Court for trial.
Traffic Inspector C. J. Heaven said in evidence that he had noticed the accused driving a car without lights. He later again drew his motor-cycle alongside the car and told the driver to reduce speed. The car later travelled at 60 miles an hour and the traffic inspector gave chase, which ended in the car crashing into a wooden and concrete fence. The driver ran away, but was eventually caught by witness and a civilian. Acting Detective Petherick said that as a result of inquiries the accused was arrested on a charge of breaking into Todd Motors. The accused had admitted breaking glass panels and doors in the premises and had said he had gained access by a fire-escape and a window. The accused had driven a car out a back door.
