‘TASMAN HOME’ FOR AGED AND INFIRM AT GREYMOUTH

The Old People’s Home at Greymouth is to have a new name— Tasman Home. A change of name tor the home has been under discussion for some time and at last, nights meeting of the Greymouth Hospital Board quite v a flood of suggested names was received from .the members of the public and various organisations. - „ Among the many names suggested were Sunset Home, Eventide, The Haven, The Moore Eventide Home, The Tasman Eventide: Home, Tasman Rest Home, Mosely Home, Mawhera Home, Grey River Home, Marsden Home, Grey Valley Rest Home, and Aorangi (“Face to The Sky”) Home. That the name Grey Valley Rest Home be adopted was the first motion put to the meeting, but an amendment .that it be Tasman Home, Greymouth, moved by. Mr A. Dalziel and seconded by Mrs D; M. Parfitt, was carried by six votes to two. Mr Dalziel pointed out that the name Tasman Home was appropriate in that it had a close fink with New Zealand’s early history. Advocating a name which did not include the word “rest” this word being favoured by some members, the chairman, Mr J. E. Stokes, said that the board wanted the old people to realise that they were entering a home of their own. “You could hardly call your own home a rest home,” he stated.

Mr C. N. Gunn: They do not go there until they rest. They are there ostensibly to rest.
