POLITICAL SPEECHES TO HOSPITAL STAFF AND PATIENTS

Political addresses to patients in hospital in connection with the forthcoming elections were referred to in a letter from the Department of Health received at a meeting of the Grey Hospital Board last night. It was stated that the department wished to advise that it could see no objection to such addresses being given to staff and patients who wished to attend meetings for this purpose at the hospital. When it was pointed out by the secretary, Mr W. H. J. Watson, that any addresses in the wards would have to be given with the authority of the superintendent, it was moved by Mr H. G. Carter, and carried, that addresses could be given at the discretion of the superintendent, Dr J. H. Maclntyre.

A letter about postal voting for hospital patients in the election was received from the Returning Officer at Greymouth, who stated that under the new regulations it had become the responsibility of the Electoral Department to arrange for voting in hospitals and other similar institutions.
