PRIESTS AND NUNS GAOLED IN MASS ARRESTS BY CZECHS
LONDON, September 20.—The Prague correspondent of the Associated Press says that Church sources said today that the Czechoslovak Government had imprisoned dozens of Roman Catholic priests and nuns in a big new wave of arrests aimed at breaking widespread resistance to the State’s control schemes, - d' A statement given to press correspondents enumerated at least 30 arrests in what was termed a partial list. It said that more arrests were expected. According to churchmen the Government’s drive apparently has three major objectives:—(l) to break up the communications network by which priests maintain contact with Archbishop Beran and other bishops; (2) to break the priests” resistance to the proposed new law which would make all. churchmen civil servants; (3) to frighten priests from carrying out the Vatican’s excommunication decree and punish for treason those who do.
