HAMILTON DEFEATS 1948 TITLEHOLDER AT N.Z. TOURNAMENT
HAMILTON, This Day (P.A.).— The decisive defeat of Palmerston North, the 1948 titleholder, by Hamilton was the feature of the play in the national men’s indoor basketball tournament at Bledisloe Hall last night. Hamilton won by 60-19. Hamilton worked tirelessly throughout, and impressed as a very fast combination, functioning essentially as a team. Palmerston North had little counter, its relatively small score coming mostly from loose play and a few set shots; from the sideline.
In one of the most exciting games of the tournament, Wellington downed Auckland, 36-26. Results:— A Grade: Auckland 53, Canterbury--29; Palmerston North 39, Otago 34; Wellington 32, Morrinsville 24; Otago 37, W,anganui 36; Morrinsville; 39, Canterbury 24; Wellington 36, Auckland 26; Hamilton 60, ton North 19. B Grade: Hawke’s Bay 31, Wairarapa 29; Hutt Valley 25, Gisborne 21; Hamilton 45, Morrinsville 26; Hawke’s Bay 48, Gisborne 24; Hutt Valley 51, Morrinsville 16.
