EASY VICTORY FOR BRAMBLE LEIGHON IN MAIN HANDICAP

NEW PLYMOUTH, August 21 (P.A.).- —The weather was fine and the track was in good order for the opening day of the combined meeting of the Taranaki and EgmontWanganui Hunt Clubs. The totalisator handled £39,161 10s, compared with £38,401 10s last year. After the Wereroa Stakes, an inquiry was held by the judicial committee into interference by the winner, Big Notes, with the second horse, Biassed, in the straight in the first division. The committee found that Big Notes had interfered with Biassed and reversed the placings. Big Notes, having his first race, ran greenly and no action was taken against his rider, R. J/ Turnwald. Betting figures are available for the first time because of returns bookmakers have to admit in paying turnover tax. The totalisator investment approximated £8,500,000. One bookmaker handled bets totalling £2,250,000, averaging £40,000 each, race day, or about £2OO for each minute available for betting.
