Hazsoult Wins Steeples

Personality made a game attempt under his big weight to justify his favouritism for the Longbeach Handicap, but had to submit to a length defeat by Terminus, who went to the front early, and was not actually called upon until the favourite challenged him in the last few strides. Terminus led. to the half mile from Haughty Lyric, Entrancing, Robin Redbreast, Beau Soir, Personality and Golden Air, and was three lengths in front entering'the straight from Beau Soir and Entrancing with Personality improving his position. It was left to the last-named to attempt to bridge the gap inside the final furlong, but although easily accounting for Beau Soir, he found the task ol getting up to the speedy leader beyond him. Snow Saint was about two lengths back, closely followed by Trench Fray, who was last away, and was several lengths from the leaders in the first furlong. Profane, Entrancing, Prince Defaulter and Romantic ■were the next to finish, with Gold Mine, Beechwood and Victory Night bringing up the rear.

Spectacular Race The Beaufort Steeplechase provided a spectacular race, the only casualty being First Out, who was pulled up before reaching the last fence. Specialist soon rushed to the front, and with a round to go had a lead of about eight lengths from San Quentin and Hazsoult, with First Out, Homespun and Bravura next in front of Roman Son, Blanket and Night Prince. Hazsoult ran past San Quentin at the mile past, and was within three lengths of Specialist rounding the home turn with a further break to Bravura, then Homespun, San Quentin and Roman Sun, with Night Prince and Eleanor Star struggling in the rear. Specialist was showing signs of the ordeal before turning for home, and both Hazsoult and Bravura had his measure going to the last fence, Hazsoult was slightly in front of Bravura taking the final obstacle, with Specialist drifting and Homespun overhauling him. Hazsoult, although ridden out,* had ho trouble m holding off Bravura in the run to the post, with Homespun finishing on to beat San Quentin by half a length for third money. Specialist was 10 lengths back and was followed at intervals by Night Prince, Eleanor Star and Blanket. The list of surprises for the day was headed by Valley Gold, winner of the Redcliffs Handicap, who paid nearly a century and three-quarters, the biggest dividend returned at Riccarton since Catterick Bridge won the New Zealand Cup in 1946. Valley Gold was one of the last to move Off, others slow away being All Pockets, Terminate and String Band. Cast High soon ran to the front and led round the top stretch from Show Boy, Albert John, Detract and Military Chief. Detract lost his place on the fence rounding the home turn, and Show Boy headed Cast High entering the straight, with Military Chief, Double Bid, Hormond, Valley Gold afid Elofa in close attendance. Show Boy was clear inside the final fur-, long, and appeared to be in. for an easy winner, but a change came over the scene over the closing stages. Valley Gold was the first to head Show Boy, and then Elofa, Detract and Terminate loomed up. Valley Gold carried on for an easy win from Elofa, who shaded Show Boy on the post, With the Unlucky . Detract half a length'away. Terminate, Hormond and Flibbertigibbit were in line close up next, and were followed by String Band, Double Bid, All Pockets, Boost and Marut, the last to finish being Sorry and Moonlit. Sprint To Lady Myrtle Flying Orders, pacemaker in the concluding event after, the first furlofig, made a bold bid to complete a day of exceptional surprise results,

but after having a useful advantage commencing the final furlong, he was beaten into third place. He was followed past the half mile by Western Winner, Magnaform, Lady Myrtle and Lexia, and led into the straight from Western Winner, Magnaform, Lexia, Lady Myrtle, Lovemorn and Da Vinci. Western Winner was the first of these to retire, and Flying Orders led past the distance from Lexia and Lady Myrtle, with Magnaform, Da Vinci and Duvaals also in the picture. Lady Myrtle put in a solid finishing run to get up on the post to beat Lexia, who headed Flying Orders in the last 50 yards. Duvaals was also finishing on half a length away, just clear of Da Vinci, Beaumaris and Magnaform together and then came Lorna Leigh, Cipher and Red Pickle in a bunch next. Cipher, Wild Ribbon, Robinfaye, Lovemorn and Maryburn were the slowest away. The programme was run in fine weather before a large crowd. The track was in good order. The totalisator turnover for the day was £129,868 compared with £134,320 10s last year. The total for the meeting was £416,275 10s against £449,946 last year.
