Brilliant Finish Brought Win For Victory Globe

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

AUCKLAND, This Day.—After a consistent performance on the first, day, Victory Globe redeemed his promise by winning the principal race at Epsom on Saturday, the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap. Always among the first six, Victory Globe put in a telling burst in the run for the post to head off Indianote, who led when the field straightened up. Whipster has had his share of ill-luck. Once again he lost about 70 yards fit the start, but was finishing particularly fast over the final quarter to get within a neck of Indianote.

Esto Fidelis began well to make the early pace from Indemnity, Loyal Nelson, Popular Girl, Paper Man, Victory Globe and Entrust. Esto Fidelis was a length clear of Indemnity as they raced along the back. The field began to bunch crossing the top and Esto Fidelis was being hard pressed by Indianote, Loyal Nelson, Popular Girl and Victory Globe as they came into line. The favourite, Whipster, was looking for fl run on the inner. Indianote quickly had the measures of Esto Fidelis but she was hotly challenged by Victory Globe on tse outer with Whipster putting in a run on the fence. Victory Globe, however, had a good length to spare from Indianote with Whipster a neck away. The meeting was concluded in fine weather but the track was dead. The attendance was 17,500. The totalisator handled £147,920 10s, compared with £136,205 10s on the second day last year, an increase of £11,715. The total for the meeting was £261,531 10s, compared with £247,531 10s, an increase of £13,617. C. Bryce, driver of Prince Hall in the Farewell Handicap, was fined £5 for excessive use of the whip.
