Lively Communist Meeting

MELBOURNE, This Day (Rec. 10 a.m.). —Blows were exchanged at a lively Communist meeting on the Yarra bank and police intervention was again necessary. A group of about 30 naval ratings and soldiers interjected throughout the meeting, and the speakers were also heckled by ex-servicemen in other parts of the crowd.

Anti-Communists sang the National Anthem and marching songs. In retaliation about 20 Communists crowded on to the platform and sang the “Internationale.”

Mounted and foot police broke up the crowd after it had refused to disperse. Then the soldiers and sailors formed ranks and marched to Prince’s bridge, singing patriotic songs. Later, naval patrols dispersed an attempt by about 60 sailors and airmen in uniform to break up a Communist lecture in Unity Hall.
