REEFTON STRONG SENIOR CLASSES AT SCHOOL OF MINES
: REEFTON, This Day (O.C.)—Num- ‘ I erically strong classes for the senior i division coal mining examinations i were reported by the director (Mr W. !J. Bolitho) at the monthly meeting j of the council of the Reefton School | of Mines. i Mr Bolitho said nine students of a total of 47 were now attending classes for first-class colliery managers’ certificates. Reefton still had the great‘l est number of students, 26, and nine J different courses of instruction were being carried on at Reefton. For* the month, 11 laboratory tests were made, five -being coal dust samples and six quartz assays. In addition, a parcel of bullion was cleaned and concentrate samples from a sluicing claim were tested for gold content. A discussion of the director’s-report led to a decision to discuss at’ a full meeting of council members the question of the engagement of an assistant for the director. The District Inspector of Mines advised that the department had questioned the application of the school for subsidy payment on coal dust samples from the State mines at Reefton. It was decided that the Under-sec-retary be advised of the position covering the treatment of these samples, and that the school make a request for subsidy payment on all such samples treated at the laboratory. It was decided that a letter of congratulation be sent to Mr Lloyd Jones, a former pupil of the school who has been appointed inspector of State tin mines in Queensland. Mr C. J. Lawn presided at the meeting, in the absence of the president (Mr J. B. Auld) from whom an apology was received, and seven members were present.
