SPORTING Mundanity Now Listed As A Classic Winner

Sheer gameness won Mundanity the initial contest for the Manawatu Futurity Stakes at Awapuni this month. Like a number of the other runners, she failed to go away correctly and was a long way behind the leaders when she settled down. Driven splendidly by Max Stewart, however, she made up the leeway steadily, and, after catching the two leaders, Stuart Earl and Mutuawa, shortly after turning for home, -she carried on to win in a hard finish.

The event provided a very disappointing spectacle, the field being vzell and truly strung out at the end of a couple of furlongs. This was compensated for, however, by an exceptionally good finish, Mundanity prevailing by only a neck from Stuart Earl and Mutuawa. who dead-heated for the minor placing. Descendant Of Kewpie

Mundanity belongs to that great family founded by Kewpie, being by Übakim from Kewpie’s Bond (3.19 1-5). It is not surprising, therefore, that she shows plenty of ability. In a wonderful career at the stud Kewpie produced such good winners as Kewpie’s Guy (2.42), Kewpie’s Triumph (4.25 3-5), Kewpie’s King (2.48 1-5), Kewpie’s Crest (2.14 2-5), Kewpie’s Queen (3.21 1-5), Kewpie’s Jewel (3.20 1-5), and Kewpie’s Crown 2.46 1-5). Those of Kewpie’s progeny who have joined the matrons’ brigade have also proved successful, among them Kewpie’s Guy (who threw Portadown, Mourne Spring and Fauvel) and Kewpie’s Queen (Prince Belwin and Vera Grattan). In addition, the first foal of Kewpie’s Bond was Bold Venture, who took a time record of 4.19 3-5 Stuart Earl raced right up to the promising form he showed in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, in which he finished fourth. A brother to Earl Pine, he displayed courage in fighting on gamely to share second place with Mutuawa. , Mutuawa (Worthy Belwin —Superfine) paced solidly all the way, and the half-brother to Awamutu and Super Lady should do well as a three-year-old. Preston Disappointed The big disappointment of the race was Preston. The handsome son of

Gamble and Grecian Gold behaved reasonably well at the barrier, but when the tapes were released he galloped off the. mark, and his driver, A. Purdon, had to pull him up almost completely before he would settle down. His task was then a hopeless one, but he showed brilliant speed to get up for fourth, not far away from the winner. Preston has a lot of ability, but he also has a good deal to learn. The Mangere-trained Sodngetaha, by Light Brigade from Polka Dot, was probably the best-looker in the field, but he ‘disgraced himself by delaying the start for a considerable period and then swinging sideways when the barrier was released. He took no part in the race. Bar Queen, a filly by Gold Bar from Queen High, also turned round at the start, and the field had gone a furlong before she decided to move.
