Fatal Fire At Christchurch: Bedroom Gutted

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A man was found dead early this morning after fire had gutted the room in which he was sleeping, <He was:— Charles Godfrey Parish, a public accountant, of 30 Bretts road, Mr Parish was sleeping in a back room. His wife noticed the.fire shortly before midnight. By this time the back room was full of dense, black smoke, which probably asphyxiated Mr Parish, ykll the windows in the room .were shut.and when the air was let in the room burst into flame; The room was completely burnt out, but the fire brigade prevented the spread of flames to the rest of the house. . Young Man Fatally Injured When two cars came into collision at the intersection of Tuam and Barbadoes streets, Christchurch, about 5.10 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of one car was fatally injured and his two passengers were injured, one of them seriously. The man killed was:— Neil Quintin Elstob, aged 24, a single man, of 35 Cranley street. Those injured were:— Winnie Tindall, of 16 Breezes road, and Ronald Patrick Bateman, of 36 Esplanade, New Brighton. Mr Elstob was driving a sports model car east along Tuam street. The other car was being driven north along Barbadoes street. Mr Elstob and his two passengers. were thrown out of the car, from which the righthand door was torn. The three were taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but Mr Elstob was dead on arrival.

Miss Tindall suffered head injuries and Mr Bateman concussion. Their condition yesterday was reported to be satisfactory. The driver of the other '•car escaped with a shaking, and the car was not damaged to any extent. Child Killed

David Kenneth Bowker, aged two years, of Putaruru, was killed when he was caught in the shafting of a milking machine. At the inquest his father, Sydney Bowker, a sharemilker, said the child had wandered into the shed, where he was caught up and dragged round by the shafting. Baby Suffocated A five-months-old baby was found dead in her cot yesterday morning by her parents, apparently having been suffocated in her ..sleep. She was Heather Emily Pollock, of Aurora avenue, Mount Roskill.— (P.A.)

Collision Between Cars Three persons were injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with another* car on West road, Kaukapakapa, early on Saturday evening. They were: Keith Woodcock, aged 21, single, a farmer, of Makarau, who suffered concussion; Richard David Hooper, aged 15 years, a farmhand, of Makarau, who also suffered concussion; and Robert James Matthew, aged 13, of Makarau, who suffered an injury to the hip.—(P.A.)
