Surprise Defeat Of Lord Manna In Hawke’s Bay Cup

HASTINGS, April 24.

The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Cup meeting opened in fine weather before a large attendance. The track was in good order. Ihe totalisatoi handled £59,872 10s, compared with £63,149 last year. An inquiry was held after- the Cup race, F. R. Meynell, rider of Lord Manna, being fined £2O for not riding the horse out to the finish. The committee found he did not ride his mount with the utmost vigour, when by using a little more effort he might have finished third. The het odds-on favourite, Lord Manna, failed to finish in a place in the Cup, having won at his seven previous starts, including a clear-cut victory at weight-for-age over King.s Ransom and Voltaic. The public backed him down to small odds, but he finished fifth, after causing trouble at the start and fading in the run home. Tiie licensed trainer, A. Griffiths, had been instructed ..to appear before the judicial committee so that an inquiry could be made into an allegation that he was guilty of misconduct towards an official. Griffith failed to appear, and he was notified to appear at the next monthly meeting. His licence was suspended in the meantime.
