STEEL DEPARTMENTS FORCED TO CLOSE
SYDNEY, October 14
One department at' the Australian Iron and Steel Works al Por Kembla closed down yesterday and four others closed this morning because of the South Coast coal strike. Nearly 1000 men are affected in these works alone. The mills produce basic steel material serving all the heavy industries on the south coast of New South .Wales. The miners’ strike has now lasted eight days and has caused the loss of nearlv 60,000 tons of coal. The miners ai*e demanding that 60 rock tunnellers working on the Kemeira tunnel between Port Kembla and Mount Keira, should leave the Australian Workers’ Union and join toe Miners’ Federation.
