70-YEAR-OLD PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN

Mr Shigeru Yoshida, the 70-year-old president of the Democratic Liberal Party waUtonight elected Prime Minister of Japan. He succeeds Mr Hitoshi Ashida, whose coalition Government collapsed when a leading Cabinet member became involved in the Showa Denko Government loan scandal. Mr Yoshida is expected to form a Cabinet from his Right Wing Democratic Liberals, together with, supporters from the Democratic Party. He has already indicated his intention to dissolve the Diet and to hold a general election.
