SILK ELIMINATED BY TASMANIAN PLAYER

MELBOURNE, October 14

New Zealand’s only remaining representative left in the Australian amateur golf championship was beaten in the fourth round today by Peter Toogood, an 18-year-old Tasmanian player, 3 and -1. Silk was one of the hottest favourites for the title. Toogood was eliminated in the film round by Keith Pix, after a great battle, winning the first two holes, but Toogood fought back brilliantly to be square at the sixth. Silk chipped dead at the ninth and turned 1 up with an outward score of 35. Toogood lost the tenth hole, but from there he came home in 4. 4,3, 4,3, 4,4, to win the match on the seventeenth green. Silk lost five of the last seven holes against an opponent who was two under fours for the round. After Toogood’s morning display many onlookers thought he would beat Pix, but he failed to hold his form and lost, 1 down.
