GOLF MRS BALL WINS N.Z. TITLE -FOR SECOND TIME
(P.-A.) PALMERSTON N., October 14. The outstanding, player at the tournament, Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui), won the New Zealand women’s golf championship for the second time tobeating Miss Helen Buchanan (Christchurch) in the final, 8 and 7. Mrs Ball, as Miss Jean Horwell, of Timaru, first won the title at Shirley in 1946. The final was placed in the worst conditions. Drizzling rain fell throughout the day. Water lay on the fairways, in bunkers, and on the greens. The Wanganui player went to 6 up when she took the home hole in a bogey 4 and 5. Mrs Ball took 41 for the second nine holes, and Miss Buchanan 38 for the eight holes she played out. The gallery had grown to about 400 when- the second round was started in heavy rain. Mrs Ball did the outward half in 40 ’ to Mrs Buchanan’s 42, and headed for home with the commanding lead of 7 up. Mrs Ball made herself dormie 8 by taking the twenty-eighth with a bogey 4 to 5 and won the match and the championship, 8 and 7, when the twenty-ninth was halved in 4.
