N.Z: GOLFER HAS PLAYED WELL ON AUSTRALIAN TOUR
New Zealand’s overwhelming defeat of Australia in the international golf match at Melbourne would have been rather less unexpected had not
Victoria a few days earlier given the visitors a frouncing. However, it was a magnificent effort, in which each member of the team contributed, his share, comments a Wellington writer. Individual performances in the Test match—and that its what really counts —ocmpletely vindicated the New Zealand Council’s selection. If one man has been a greater success than another, then it is D. L. Woon, whose selection in some quarters was roundly criticised. B. M. Silk, R. H. Glading, and J. P. Hornabrook, of course, were golfers of established reputations, national champions. Hornabrook may not, in the singles anyway, have come up to expectations (carelessness by his caddy cost him a win in the Test match) but who of other New Zealand golfers would have accomplished, as much? The result proved that golf is one of the few sports in which New Zealanders can rank with the best overseas.
