CEMENT SHORTAGE RELIEVED: RATA UNLOADED TODAY
Urgently needed supplies of cement are being distributed in Greymouth today, the arrival of the s.s. Rata from Tarakohe yesterday bringing'to an end a shortage that had become severe during the past month. The Rata did not bring a. full cargo. The cargo was 355 tons, a hold-up at Tarakohe interfering with loading operations, but it is possible that a further shipment of cement will be made shortly. The last shipment of cement to arrive at Greymouth was in July and since then the Rata, which transports cement to the West Coast, has thrice been unable to undertake scheduled trips. During the past month, cement has been in short supply and some building work has been stopped for several weeks. The shortage would have ended two weeks ago when the ■Rata brought down a load of cement, but she was unable to enter the port owing to heavy seas on the bar, and 'eventually discharged the cement at Westport. This is her first trip since then.
Greymouth builders have been able to resume operations during the past week with cement transported from Westport, these supplies being obtained by merchants and individual building groups.
