EXCAVATOR ARRIVES FOR WORK IN GREY BOROUGH

The mechanisation programme of the Greymouth Borough Council has been advanced by the addition to its equipment of a large excavator, which is now being employed on various projects on the town. Costing £3600, the excavator arrived in Greymouth from England last month, and, after being assembled, was first used to level portion of the vast area of the southern extension of the cemetery to be put into order. The mechanical shovel is driven by one of the members of the council’s staff, who has been trained for the purpose, and is at present being operated in Marsden road where roading work is in progress. Shortage of staff during the past week or so, however, has prevented full use being made of the machine, which is expected to reduce considerably the time taken on the larger road formation, drainage, gas and water main projects in the town.
