“Jacques” writes to the Otago Daily Times as follows: —“The smug satisfaction with which the decision not to provide the All Blacks with dinner suits has been hailed indicates the very definite insularity of the people of this country, and shows a very poor understanding of life outside our complacent democracy. Surely it is reasonable to place our most respected sporting representatives on a plane befitting their proved place as ambassadors of our country, and to give them the opportunity of appearing at other than informal functions during their visit to South Africa? The mentality of those who decry any formality almost suggests that the All Blacks would be true representatives of the country if they wore bowyangs, and if the New Zealand Rugby Union wants to save money it could achieve that object by supplying sufficiently generous fern leaves to hide their ’ shame. A melancholy world!” —The Seeker
