BIG INCREASE IN WESTLAND GIRL GUIDE MEMBERSHIP
A big increase in membership was reported at the annual meeting of the Westland Girl Guides’ Association. The Provincial Commissioner, Mrs L. Schaef, in her annual report said that the roll now stood at 320, an increase of 109 for the year. It had been a busy and progressive year for the movement in Westland, with the opening up of a new district, Inangahua, with outstanding success. Two Brownie packs and one Guide company had been formed. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs F. Boustridge; vice-presidents, Mesdames F. Kitchingham and Bunt; provincial executive, Mesdames C. Gunn, Yates, C. Lindsay, A. Jamieson, Faulkner and a representative from Reefton and Hokitika; committee, Mesdames E. Parfitt, Cook, Cooper, Armstrong, Carpenter, A. Harrison and Logan. Mrs Schaef, in her annual report said that the Iles shield, competed for by the Ist Greymouth Company while the Brownie trophy went to Hokitika. The United Nations appeal was well responded to and £lO 10s was raised. The visit from the World Chief Guide was an outstanding success and many new recruits were enrolled as a result of the enthusiasm evoked. New packs and companies had been formed in Camerons and Blaketown whilst a new pack attached to St Mary’s Company Greymouth had been registered. Thanks were due to the press, badge examiners, the hall committee, the broadcasting station and all who had helped during the year. The Westland guides had combined with the scouts to publish an enlarged edition of Kia Kua, the provincial magazine, with a circulation of 800.
