CYCLING West Coast Rider Performs Well In 135-mile Race

An outstanding performance was recorded by the veteran West Coast rider, D. Clark, of Stillwater, when he finished in second place in the Waimate-Christchurch. road cycling championship race of 135 miles, which was held on Saturday. Clark, who started off the 38n:in mark, covered the journey in shr 40min Isec, only two seconds behind the winner, S. Weir (Christchurch). Clark, who is one of the oldest active members of the Greymouth Cycling Club, is nearly 40 years of age and has competed in the majority of the main South Island long distance races since 1931. His placing in Saturday’s race is his best to date in such races, although he secured third place two years ago.

Of the ten West Coast riders who started, only three completed the. course. They were Clark, M. Bergamini and E. Maguigan. Maguigan secured fourth fastest time. The young West Coast rider, A. Bergamini, did not start. Records for first and fastest time were established for the race, which was held in ideal weather with a following wind at different periods. The winner, S. Weir (Christchurch) rode the distance in shr 39min 59sec. The previous record was made last year by G. McKenzie (Tinwald), in 6hr 7min 55sec. Fastest time went to T. Davey (Auckland), shr 20min 30sec. Davey gained fastest time in the Timaru-Chfistchurch race, which was- held the previous Saturday.
