RUSSIA SUCCUMBS TO THE ‘NEW LOOK’
LONDON, October 7
Russia has just succumbed to the “new look” a year after everyone else. The longer hemline has appeared in Russian winter collections in Moscow. No fewer than 1500 models, many featuring the “new look,” were displayed by Russian dress designers, the Soviet Monitor announced. The Russian show far outnumbered any Western fashion display. American shows normally numbered 100 models, while British ones seldom reached 50.
Although the Soviet hemline has dropped in most outfits, the skirts of working dresses and sports clothes have stayed just below the knee. Fur trimmings were freely used in the Russian dresses.
New heavy silks were shown, chief-
ly in evening dresses. The traditional Russian hand-embroidered blouse was another feature, and will be worn in future, the designers hope, with a longer skirt.
