DOMINION SECRETARY ADDRESSES WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING

A meeting of the West Coast Women’s Institutes was held in the Lyceum Hall, Greymouth, on Wednesday. The federation president, Mrs R. Barker, presided and all institutes were well represented. Visitors from Hokitika and Ross were also present. Members of the Greymouth Institute were hostesses. ~ The guest at the meeting was the Dominion secretary, Mrs L. Horn, who gave an address on her recent travels in Holland. Belgium, France and England where she was New Zealand’s delegate to the A.C.W.W. Mrs Horn said that it had been stressed at that meeting that women should play a bigger part in the world’s peace. Items were given by Runanga, Blaketown and Cobden Institutes. Mrs M. Meade, Cobden, was the accompanist. On Tuesday executive members of the West Coast Federation tended an “evening” to Mrs Horn at the residence of Mrs R. Longstaff, Blaketown. Karoro W.l.

There was a good attendance at the Women’s Institute, Mrs Dodd presiding. Mrs Airey of the Blaketown Institute, demonstrated book binding. The appeal towards the cost of sending Christmas cakes to the English link was well received. Mrs Dunwoodie offered to undertake the baking of the cakes. Competitions were won as follows:— Best Bloom, Mrs Murray 1, Mrs Fleming 2. Mrs Dunwoodie 3; pikelets, Mrs Dodd 1, Mrs Murray 2, Mesdaines Mcßobie and Dunwoodie equal 3; baby’s feeder, Mrs Murray 1, Mrs Reynolds 2, Mrs Anderson'3; three daffodils, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Trowbridge 3 The roll-call “hints for spring cleaning” was well responded to. Garden Circle

The Garden Circle of the Greymouth Townswomen’s Guild held its monthly meeting recently. Mr Smith, borough gardener, gave an interesting talk on the preparing of soil and a demonstration on the pricking out of seedlings. One new member was welcomed. Mrs E. Bunt gave a prepared talk on the growing of fruit trees. The September garden competition was won by Mrs S. McKay. Mrs P. Joyce was second.
