LAWN TENNIS Australian Pair Beaten In U.S. Tournament
NEW YORK. August 15
Frank Parker beat Ted Schroeder, 6-2, 9-7, 6-2, to win the Eastern grass courts tennis championship at South Orange, New Jersey. Parker’s tennis was considered the best of his career. He outplayed Schroeder in all departments. Talbert and Mulloy beat Long and Sidwell in the doubles final. 7-5, 6-2, 4-6. 6-3. The Australians’ defeat was a surprise, as they had won their semi-final against Parker and Schroeder in straight sets. Today’s victory makes Talbert and Mulloy the outstanding pair to defend the Davis Cup in the doubles against either Australia or Czechoslovakia. Miss Brough won the women’s title, beating Mrs Dupont, 6-3, 8-6.
Bromwich “Washed Up” (Rec. 1 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day Australia had an excellent chance of winning the Davis Cup without the services of Bromwich, said Sir Norman Brookes, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia.
