BRITAIN’S RESEARCH WORK: PLANS FOR N.Z. AND AUSTRALIA
MELBOURNE, April 5. Australia and New Zealand will be centres of a British Commonwealth aeronautical radio and radar research programme costing a fabulous sum, according to Sir Ben Lockespeiser, Chief Scientist to the British Ministry of Supply. He said that there would be a wide development of the Australian aircraft industry, with design and engineering teams producing new aircraft. . Because of its hydro-electric power resources, New Zealand, and possibly Tasmania as well, would probably be selected as a major British centre for fundamental supersonic research, linked with the Australian longrangp weapons project. As it would be the finest plant in the Empire, it would attract the best, brains in the British Commonwealth. “We have got to disperse our research and development work, he added, “and we must take advantage of the resources and ability of other members of the British Commonwealth in building up equipment. This includes wind tunnels requiring 250.000-horse-powev compressors for testing gas turbines, and metallurgical and other apparatus, .rhe supersonic equipment is being planned at Farnborough, England.
