SHARP RISE IN BRITAIN’S NATIONAL INCOME
(Rec. 10.15 a.m.) LONDON,- April 5. A White Paper estimates Britain’s national income for 1947 at £8,770,000,000, an increase of £670,000,000 over 1946. Borrowing from abroad totalled £675,000,000, an increase of £295,000,000 over 1946. / Total wages rose by 14 per cent, to £3,530,000,000. Expenditure on beer totalled £481,000,000, tobacco £690,000,000 and food £1,995,000,000, compared with £1,761,000,000 in 1946 and £1,287,000,000 in 1938. Six and a-half per cent, of the value of all goods and services bought in Britain in 1947 was financed out of money borrowed overseas, compared with four per cent, in 1946 and just over one per cent, in 1938.
