TRAINER OF N.Z. CUP WINNER AT HOKITIKA

J. McLean, who trained Catterick Bridge, when he was residing in the Hawke’s Bay district, is now at Hokitika, and while he has no horses in training at present it is understood that he intends to resume training at. an early date. McLean had a good deal of success when at Riccarton and later in the north, and his entry to the ranks of trainers on the West Coast will be welcomed. He trained Catterick Bridge at Hastings for' Mr H. M. Glazebrook when the Foxbridge gelding won the 1046 New Zealand Cup. A Tired Horse "

According to northern reports Howe looked a very tired horse when he paraded for the Autumn Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. He moved scratchily in his preliminary and was eased up early in the run home. He is due for a well-earned spell.

Unlucky Runner The .Riccarton-trained Maryburn was one of the unlucky runners on the first day of the Trentham meeting. He was badly placed in the middle stages arid was still pocketed when he turned for home. It was only in the last furlong that an opening presented itself and he was finishing over everything at the finish into third place. He will probably see a short price in the Champion Hack Handicap next Saturday. Faded Near Finish

Citril, the favourite for the Railway Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, was prominent to the last 100 yards when she started to weaken and she finished in fourth place. This was her first race since January and she should be improved considerably by Saturday’s effort. She is engaged again on Saturday in the Suburban Handicap and is one of the early favourites for the Riccarton Great Easter. Winner At Oamaru

Faustina, winner of the Trial Stakes at Oamaru, is a four-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Legis by Solicitor General from imported Sky Bird, and is trained at Washdyke by F. Trilford. The stable also supplied the runner-up, Phalehor a four-year-old gelding by Phaleron Bay from Elegy, one of the Eulogy family. Faustina raced earlier in the year at Omoto, where she finished second to Sitology in the Farewell Hack Handicap. _ Another Cup

His fifth success in a race of this type was recorded by the Foxbridge gelding Royal Charter in the Taranaki Cup. It must be many years since a horse has won so many important cup contests in a single term. His latest victory brought Royal Charter’s winnings to £9106 since he started racing. In all he has started in 40 races for 13 wins, five seconds and four thirds. With his Taranaki Cup netting him £lOOO, inclusive of a handsome gold cup valued at £7O, Royal Charter has now won £4550 this season. Bred at the Trelawney Stud. Cambridge, and sold as a yearling for 800gns. Royal Charter is a six-year-old by Foxbridge from Ribbon, by Garter Blue from Aphrodisia, by Martian from Paphia, by Birkenhead from the Apremont mare Aphrodite, a sister of Nenuphar, ancestress of those great gallopers Limerick and Ballymena.

Likely Novice A novice who is showing improvement with racing is Gay Fellow, a three-year-old half-brother by Robin Goodfellow to the Manawatu Cup winner Gay Stroller. At Woodville recently he went quite a fair race to finish third in the second division of the Maiden Plate after standing up the leaders an appreciable advantage in the early stages. Gay Fellow has faced the starter on only four occasions, and it will be surprising if the patient policy that has been adopted with him is not rewarded in the near future. To Train Again

One of the best lightweight Jockeys riding in the Dominion during his career, W. H. Jones has purchased a property at Matamata and is setting up as a trainer. His most notable success in the saddle was his win on Palantua in the New Zaeland Cup of 1933, and he was also associated with the versatile Master Doon in his Railway Handicap victory at Ellerslie in 1924. About 12 years ago Jones trained the Musketoon mare Rona Bay, achieving a good measure of success with that useful performer. At present he is handling a two-year-old chestnut filly, Lauderdale, by Diatomous from Ann Bay.

High-Priced Pacer Attack, who won the Weston Trot Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday, is the pacer who was bought recently by Mr N. Scott for 1740gns. He won his race at Oamaru by two lengths in 3.22 2-5 from a 3.37 mark, so he may soon repay his purchase price. On March 2 at the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Addington he indicated that he was well forward by winning a heat from Double Scotch, who later won at Motukarara. The 1740gns was a good price but apparently Attack had shown'his new owner a. trial good enough to warrant the outlay.
