TENNIS PLAYER’S DRAMATIC FLIGHT TO UNITED STATES

SYDNEY, November 13. The Australian singles tennis champion, Dinny Pails, left Sydney unexpectedly by air last night for, America, where he intends to become a professional. His impending departure was kept a very close secret, as he was under contract to the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia to remain in the Commonwealth until January 31. He made a late booking on a Skymaster, using another name so that his identity did not become known. Only his wife, mother and two intimate friends knew his plans. In heated comment, the president of the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Bryan Fuller K.C., said: “Australian amateur tennis is well rid of Pails. Speaking metaphorically, I kiss him goodbye with pleasure and wish him well.” He said he thought it was another act of discourtesy by Pails, who was chosen to play in the inter-State match between New South Wales and Victoria, starting on Wednesday, and in the New South Wales championship the following week. In letters to sporting editors delivr ered this morning, Pails said that for business reasons he found it imperative to leave for the United States. The statements he made regarding the recent Davis Cup tour were in the hands of his solicitors, he. said, and he had not dodged his responsibility on that score.
