EQUAL-PAY CLAIM BY WOMEN RAILWAY WORKERS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Equal pay for equal work and in particular, whether women railv)aycarriage, cleaners should receive the same wages as male cleaners was argued today before the Railways Industrial Tribunal.
The case for women, cleaners,, as members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, was put by Mr H. R. Bishop. Railways Department, female car cleaners, he said, were required to perform the same duties as those allotted to the male cleaners in' cleaning the inside of carriages, and they were allotted the same number of cars.
On behalf of the department, Mr N. L. Stevenson said the present relation of rates of pay for cleaners was considered reasonable. The broader implications which would be. involved in relation to the ratio oi women’s wages to men’s in other classes of work, if the claim were allowed, could not be overlooked.
