FOURTH SURVEY OF COAST LABOUR TRENDS CONDUCTED

The fourth survey of the labour situation on the West Coast has been practically completed by the Department of Employment and Labour at Greymouth. It is expected that the results of an analysis of the returns from employers will be available early next month. The first survey was carried out by the department in April,* 1946, and since then returns have been sought every six months. The survey will show, stated the district officer, Mr J. C. Corbishley this morning, the movement of labour, wage trends, the number of vacancies offering, and which industries are maintaining their labour force and which are losing, as well as whether' essential production industries are maintaining theii’ fail’ share of the labour force in comparison with non-pro-ductive enterprises. In the event of a decline in the number of employees in essential occupations, to the advantage of non-productive industries, efforts would be made to make the productive occupations more attractive to workers.
