CARDINAL’S VIEWS ON NATIONALISATION
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The view that the nationalisation of any one enterprise of national welfare could not be condemned and it was only when nationalisation embrased the entire life of the people that it should be censured was expressed today by • Cardinal Gilroy when asked at a press conference for his views on the proposed nationalisation of Australian banks.
Cardinal Gilroy said it would be unfair, however, to discuss the Bill until the full text was published. Governments had an obligation 1o protect the personal freedom and human dignity of the individual and the welfare of the entire nation. It was not clear that the nationalisation of any public utility would be detrimental to those freedoms. Asked if he had anything to say on the revival of the Comintern, Cardinal Gilroy said the inquiry in Canada iinto the activities of Communists showed the Comintern was dissolved only in name. In. fact its activities had continued. It was unreasonable to suppose there had been any change in the activities of the Communists’ leader. The Church’s attitude was one of instruction. It had pointed out the dangers to the human race of the principles advocated by the Communists.
