INCREASE IN PAY FOR APPRENTICES
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The recent pronouncement of the Arbitration Court fixing new standard rates of pay has had the effect of increasing apprentices’ pay from October 1. This was made clear today by the Commissioner of Apprenticeship, Mr 11. C. McQueen, when he referred to the confusion of some employers regarding the effect of the court’s decision on apprentices’ pay. The Arbitration Court recently introduced the principle of fixing apprentice pay as a percentage of the rates for journeymen. Therefore, if journeymen’s pay is increased, apprentices' pay is increased according to the percentage principle, he said.
