CATS SUSPECTED OF CARRYING DISEASE
BRISBANE, This Day.
Hundreds of cat owners in Brisbane are killing their pets because they fear cats may be carriers of gastro enteritis. Eighty-four children have died in Brisbane from gastroenteritis since June of last year and 27 children are now in hospital with this disease. . • The secretary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mr O’Sullivan, fears a plague of rats in the city if the slaughter continues. More than 30 cats have been taken to the Society for destruction in the past two days. All were fine, healthy animals and, according to Mr O’Sullivan, the owners were making a useless sacrifice. The director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Dr lan Mackerras, said there was not definite proof yet that cats were carriers of gastro-enteritis.
