Drive Started By Communists In Manchuria
(Rec. 11.15 a.m.) PEKING, September 26.
Crack Government reinforcements have been rushed to southwest Manchuria. Meanwhile the Communists have intensified their attacks against Chinhsi, on the Tientsin-M ukden railway, and are threatening Chinhsien. 40 miles farther north.
The Communists destroyed three sections of the railway south of the Great Wall. Government armoured trains are patrolling the railway between Suichung and Chinhsi, but there is still no official report on Suichung’s status, which was reported to have been, captured by the Communists several days ago. All the Peking newspapers agree that the long-expected Communist offensive in Manchuria has begun. Communists paid a lightning visit to Hanku, a railway town 30 miles northeast of Tientsin, capturing power plant workers and taking some of the plant and equipment. The Nanking newspaper, Hsin Min Pao, reports that Government forces in the Shantung peninsula captured Lungkow, on the gulf of Chihli, and Haiyang.
