‘AMERICAN LABOUR WILL FIGHT WITHOUT STRIKES’

(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 1. “Labour will fight its enemies, not with ill-considered strikes but with the ballot,” declared Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, addressing a Labour Day mass meeting. He warned labour not to arouse the spirit of retaliation in attacking the TaftHartley Labour Act and other anti-, labour laws, but rather for their own good and the country’s welfare to keep production going at full blast and the wheels of industry moving without serious interruption.

Mr Green said labour’s electionyear platform would include, firstly, the reduction of exorbitant prices to bring the cost of living to a reasonable level; secondly, full employment with decent standards of living; thirdly, a broad housing programme, accelerating the construction of 1,000,000 new, comfortable homes; fourthly, an increased minimum wage; and, fifthly, stronger social security laws to prevent workers being cast on the scrap heap in their old age and forced to take the pauper s dole.
