TODAY’S ISSUE INCORPORATES THE HOKITIKA GUARDIAN

v Owing to the Hokitika Guardian office being inundated with water by the flood, it was impossible to print the usual issue today. This issue of the Evening Star is being distributed to all readers of our Hokitika contemporary.

Marshal A. de T. Nevill, the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Group Captain W. C. Sheen, and the Ah’ Secretary, Mr T. A. Barrow.

The National Airways Corporation advises that the closing of the Rongotai airport to all commercial aircraft as from September 26, as announced last Saturday, affects all National Airways services into and out of Wellington. After this date all services will depart from and arrive at Paraparaumu. The corporation regrets the inconvenience to passengers and will do its best to minimise these as far as possible. A traffic building and cafeteria are being erected at Paraparaumu and the most comfortable buses available will be used.

Higher Fares The corporation is faced with heavy additional expense in connec - tion with the temporary operation of Paraparaumu—the transportation of passengers by road and additional flying to and from the South Island, also the heavy cost of operating and servicing aircraft at this field. The present level of fares makes it impossible for these additional costs to be absorbed by the corporation. The directors regret that it is necessary to’ impose an additional charge of 10s on all passengers’ fares in and out of Wellington while the services are operated from Paraparaumu. There will be no additional charge for through passengers, and freight rates to and from Wellington will not be increased. The services are not to be reduced, it is announced, but the time-tables will be affected and changes will be an-’ nounced shortly.
