GIMCRACK GOODS IN JAPAN AT ABSURD PRICES

(Recd. 1 p.m.) TOKIO, Sept. 1. The official prices of Japanese goods for private trade, which were released today, with Supreme Command approval, were described by visiting traders —mostly American —as “absurdly high.” With the exception of toys, Christmas decorations and other gimcrack, there is little available, for sale. All the prices were listed in United States dollars.

Typical items were 400 wooden fans at 33 dollars and 60 cents; a desk fan at 23.40; a small tea kettle 1.10 and dolls up to six dollars. A certain amount of food is available but this is also considered to be highly priced.
