Farmers And Lime
Sir, —On reading the account of Mr M. Wallace’s statement in the paper, what struck me most was how much Mr Wallace did not tell us. Also his quotation for lime to Barrytown was misleading, as lime bought in Barrytown has cost 29s a ton on trucks. He has also cried down the idea that our West Coast soil has not a deficiency of cobalt. If all the farms on the Coast were tested, we would probably find more deficiencies than we would like to know. Not one farmer knows what his soil is carrying till it has been tested. The burning question is: Why all this opposition to a lime-works at Cobden? Why not put all the opposition cards on the table? Ross will never be able to supply the needs of the Coast, and, after all, 69 per cent, lime is better than none at a!!. In conclusion, I would point out that Mr Wallace said that he represented and spoke for the farmers, but I say that I am one of the many farmers whom he does not represent. —Yours, etc., COBDEN LIME. Barrytown, August 30. (Abridged.—Editor, Evening Star.)
