REEFTON Works Department And Rebuilding Of Coal Creek Bridge

(O C ) REtFTOK- This Day. The Ihangahua County Cdttficil, at its monthly meeting,, received a letter from the Public Works Department concerning the replacement of Coal Creek bridge; The department advised that to' rebuild the bridge in concrete would cost £10,500 to £12,000, and a suspension bridge to carry an 8-ton lorry load would cost £ 6'ooo. They did not recommend the use of a Bailey bridge except in a case of extreme emergency as the hire of this type of bridge from the Army Department was very costly.' Th° council was asked to decide in . .favour of bridging the stream With a suspension bridge. . In order to enquire more fully into the probable cost of repairing the present bridge, it Was decided to allow the matter’ to stand over in the meantime. Assistance for Visiting Band Cr C. Coxa'll reported on a meeting held with officers of the inarigahua Silver Band concerning a proposed visit .to Reef ton on January 8 of the Wellington Boys’ Institute Band. The council had been asked to help in organising and billeting the visitors. The party would comprise 40 members. Cr Archer commended the project to the council as well worthy of support.—lt was decided that £lO be granted'to help to pay for the accommodation for the visiting band. . The Reefton Croquet Club advised its willingness to co-operate With the council and the local swimming club in improving the unused part of the Strand Domain.—ln order to complete the arrangements, it Was decided that the council meet repfe--sentatives of both clubs. Cr C. Coxa'll spoke of the'. pobf support accorded the recent visit to Reefton of the cine unit of the" Soil Conservation Council. Only 12 persons attended the .showing of the films.—A resolution was passed that on the next tour of the cine unit Cronadun and Mawheraiti be included in the places visited. An application by Premier Gold Dredging Company to widen Big River Track was granted subject to the protection of county rights. Railway Warning Signs The district engineer, New Zealand Railways, advised that the county was responsible for the erection and maintenance of railway traffic warning signs.—The New Zealand Counties’ Association also advised that this was the position.—lt was decided to undertake the erection of signs at the several railway crossings needing attention.—The Railways Department thanked the' council for erecting a light at Buller' road crossing, Reefton station, and advised that when fencing wire became available attention would be given to the fencing of railway lines to prevent stock Wandering oh the permanent way. The Department of Lands and Survey forwarded a quotation for 25 copies of the plan for the new town area of Reefton. In view of the proposal to build on the Chattockville area and for roads there, it was resolved that the clerk obtain a plan of the new’housing area for inclusion in the Reefton town extensions. Cr F. W. Archer said that following a meeting with a representative of the Highways Board he had been advised that the council could shortly expect that both Gannon’s road and Boundary read would be declared as highways. • The county health inspector in his quarterly report advised that no cases of infectious diseases had been notified in the county for the three months. Black’s Point Water Supply The county clerk was authorised to have the necessary plan prepared for the Black’s Point water reticulation area. The Mines Department advised that it was not possible to. make a grant or supply a subsidy for a water supply for Black’s Point. On the motion of Cr Coxall it was decided again to make application to the Mines Department for a subsidy to provide a water supply for Black’s Point. It was pointed out that most of the residents in that arsa were mine Workers. ,

(0.C.) , REEFTON, This Day. The report of Matron Whisker, received at the monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board, showed that the period had been a very busy one. The statistics were: Admitted, 52; discharged, 24; in-patients, 33; births, 8; X-rays, 50; out-patients, 104. x Mr J. J.. Morris forwarded payment of £lBO, being balance due on the purchase of the Merrijigs Hotel building and licence. Mr L. E. Morgan asked that the board complete the transfer docu~ments. It was resolved that the chairman (Mr J. B. Auld) and Mr Topp sign the necessary transfer. A letter was received from the' Inangahua District Progress League concerning, the provision in the new hospital plans for a ward for accommodation for elderly ladies. No action was taken. The chairman explained that the Department of Health had declined to approve of a proposal made by the board- for such a ward in the new hospital.
