MAYORAL ELECTIONS

RETURN TO OLD SYSTEM FORECAST OPPOSITION TO MOVE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 12. A forecast of legislation affecting the election of city councils to be brought down by the Government in the coming session was made by Cr. R. A., Wright at a meeting of the Wellington City Council to-night. Councillors would know that as a result of legislation passed at. the end of the last sessipn of Parliament, council elections would be held in November instead of in April, said Cr. Wright. The new legislation _ to be brought in at the coming session would return the polling to the old ward system, with the mayor to be elected by the councillors instead of by a separate mayoral election. Cr. Wright asked the Mayoi' (Mr. W. Appleton) if he would raise the matter at the forthcoming municipal conference, so that forces could be organised to fight the legislation when it was introduced. The Mayor said he. would be glad to raise the matter at the conference.
