A sequel to the shooting of a farmer at Te Whakarae, near TaUmarunui, on January 11, .was the opening of the trial of two boys, James .Frederick Dodd, aged 15, and Cyril James Pascoe, aged -.14, in the Supreme Court to-day on the charge of murdering Raymond Douglas Brinkman, aged 23, a farmer. For the Crown, Mr, F. J. Strang said the boys escaped ..from, the Owairaka Boys’ Home, Mount Albert, op January 6. They were arrested on .January 11 at Ohura and taken to Taumarunui. While waiting . for. a train to take them to Auckland the two boys escaped, took two bicycles, and rode along the TaumarunuiStratford highway. It was alleged that they.stole a .22 repeating rifle, ammunition, and money from a parked car. Mr. Strang said the boys went to a farmhouse and, when they were leaving it, saw a man approaching. They hid behind a : shed. The man, Raymond Douglas Brinkman, enter;ed the house, but came out again i carrying a stick. Pascoe started to run up the hill and was seen by Brinkman, who asked what he was doing. Pascoe replied that he was shooting rabbits. He was ordered to come down..

It was alleged that Dodd then came from behind the shed, shot Brinkman in the. body, and, as Brinkman ran around the house, fired another shot. Shortly after, a cyclist and a motor-car came along, and Brinkman , who was found lying by the roadside, was taken to the Taumarunui Hospital, where he died six days, later. The boys were arrested shortly after by a police party. Dodd, to whom Pascoe had passed the rifle when he sgw the police, was ordered to drop it, and did so.
