GAS SERVICE FAULTS

“MOST OF THEM PURELY LOCAL’’ MR. FAIRMAID’S STATEMENT “In present circumstances most of the faults which develop are purely local and can be rectified within a day or so,” said the manager of the Greymouth Municipal Gas Department, Mr. A. J. Fairmaid, discussing Greymouth’s gas supply with an Evening Star representative this morning. He added that there might be difficulties when the winter demand came on, but, meanwhile, consumers experiencing any difficulty with their supply would do well to advise the gas office immediately of any fault in the service. Mr. Fairmaid said that as a result of the recent publicity given to the shortcomings of the gasworks at Greymouth, there seemed to be an impression abroad that any fault that developed was general and could not well be corrected. This impression was incorrect. " «, Mr. Fairmaid and Mr. G. R. Harker (chairman of the Borough Council gas committee) recently attended the Dominion gas conference at Christchurch. They interviewed Mr. F. J. Kennedy, of Wellington, who is preparing a report on the proposed reconstruction of the Greymouth gasworks, and secured from him copies of correspondence which has passed between him and British manufacturers concerning plant for Greymouth. They also obtained copies of plans .of types of installations suitable for Greymouth. The British manufacturers have advised that every endeavour will be made to expedite the supply of information in connection with the Greymouth 1 works, but that at present they are unable to cope with the demand for gas equipment.
