BOWLING TITLES Runanga Players: Still In Singles And Pairs

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. 1 ghe influx ’of. new l)lood into the ' post-sectippal play of the‘singles antj i fours TQrnpetitii?ns. is a feature of the thirty-rSecorib snnusl championship’ tournamept of the New Zealand Bowling; Association at Wellington. The only player left in both singles and pairs is E. P. Exelby (Frankton junction)', who, although a topline player,- has never shown such brilliance as he has this week. No former singles champion is included in the six players remaining in the singles, although F.' White, Runanga, is a skip of champion fours. R. Haworth (Canterbury), who skipped the winning pair in. 1936 and .the winning four in. 1935 and 1937, has still a chance of annexing the pairfe a second time;..., j. Armstrong. (Runanga), No. 3 of the present champion four, is still in th’e pairs. The only two-lifers left are W. Freeth (Maitai) in the singles, and Martin and Williams (Edgeware) in the pairs. The fifth day of the tournament brought brilliant bowling weather. > Exelby’s Chances Although his. performance in the pairs on the Thorndon green brought Exelby • many supporters for the singles, he has a long way to go in the first flight of bowlers —he did well at the. national tournament in Dunedin. He; would; have to dispose of Anton (Helensville) and White (Runanga) before he could meet. Freeth, who won a great following lasi week. Even then, the winner would be confronted by either Vella (Onehunga), who was fifth in the singles last year, or by T, T. Skoglund (Otahuhu), whose form, is giving his admirers increasing confidence. When the singles play started on Saturday morning the field contained three two-lifers and 17 onc-lifers. The two-lifers were Skoglund, Freeth and Buchan (Balmacewan). Draw for Singles The draw for post-section, play in the champion singles, to be arranged as opportunity offers, is that Anton plays the winner of White and Exelby, and that the winner plays Freeth, the only two-lifer left, and Vella plays Skoglund. Accommodation at the Thorndon green was inadequate for the crowd which attended to see the two-lifers contest their section of the pairs. This section was dominated by Martin and Williams (Edgeware), who are the only two-lifer pair left. Williams is one of the most consistent skips in Canterbury, and has been the champion of champions in Christchurch twice. Throughout the day it had been thought that Hawkins and Exelby might prove invincible, but again Williams achieved victory by 21-18. Among the one-lifers on the Hutt green, J. Marwick and L. Lambess (Whangarei) were the only ones to come through. In this section _ an Onehunga four were in opposition, T. R. George and F. Livingstone, the former New Zealand singles and fours champion, going down before their team mates, J .W. Macklow and IL A. Robertson, 23-21.
