BOXING Jones Easily Beats McCann

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. Willie Jones, the American negro welterweight, easily beat one of New Zealand’s most successful middleweights of last season, Jack McCann, at Petone, on Saturday, in a scheduled 12-round contest.

Jones revealed such superiority in reach, speed, and punching power that McCann was obviously a beaten man by the second round. The end came early in the third round, when McCann was so confused, after having twice been down for the count of nine, that the referee (Mr. A. Cleverley) stopped the fight and declared Jones the winner.

The official weights were: McCann, list 5 jib; Jones, lOst 81b. The result served to endorse Bos Murphy’s cautious tactics against Jones, who demonstrated that he combines a deadly punch with skill as a boxer.

The stopping by the referee (Mr. L. Stewart) in the second round of la four-round amateur preliminary bout, between B. Coulalias and H. Hanson, on the ground of dissatisfaction with the nature of the contest, was one of the sensations of the programme. Coulalias, one of the outstanding amateur middleweights in the country, had an advantage of nearly half a stone. A fortnight ago he beat Hanson on points, being the aggressor during the final stages of the bout. His hard punching had Hansen groggy at the final bell. On Saturday Hansen had the better of the bout, swinging both hands freely. Coulalias was content largely to cover up from the flurry of blows, and twice went down on one knee to take a short count. In the second round the referee sent both boxers to their corners and called in the announcer to advise his dissatisfaction with the nature of the contest and his intention to reserve his decision. A burst of applause gieeted his action. t In a statement issued to-night, Mr. Stewart said that because of investigations made by him, he had declared the Coulalias-Hanson bout a no-contest, and would report both boxers to the New Zealand Boxing Council. •
